Oils in the Bible

Ezekiel 47:12 (KJV) Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary.  Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.

Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood

Royal Hawaiian™ Sandalwood has a rich, sweet, warm, and woodsy aroma that is sensual and romantic. Used traditionally for meditation, this oil is uplifting and relaxing and is valued in skin care for its moisturizing properties.
Picture
SANDALWOOD derives from the evergreen tree and is considered an ALOE. (Not to be confused with today's ALOE VERA.) SANDALWOOD is popular due to its moisturizing properties as well as its ability to relax and calm and is often used in meditation.

Biblical Reference to Sandalwood

John 19:39-40 “He (Joseph of Arimathea) was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.”

Psalm 45:8 All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad.

Numbers 24:6 A symbol of abundance and provision
Psalm 45:8, Proverbs 7:17 A perfume
Song of Solomon 4:14 An incense
John 19:39 Burial ointment for Christ

Believed to be made from fragrant sandalwood, aloes were a gift Nicodemus brought to Jesus. (John 19:39)

From Gary Young:

Modern science is now beginning to investigate the antiseptic and immune supporting properties of some of the constituents of these precious oils. Studies conducted at the University of Wisconsin show that limonene can inhibit aflatoxins and their production by toxic fungi and prevent DNA damage.

Cypress

Was the Ark made of CYPRESS? In old Biblical terms the wood is referred to as "gopher wood."
CYPRESS is believed to have been used by most for its durability.

(Many newer translations of the Bible have changed "gopher wood" to CYPRESS. GOPHER WOOD was never established as CYPRESS, CEDAR, or any other wood.)

Picture
New International Version:
So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.

Isaiah 60:13
"The glory of Lebanon will come to you, the juniper, the fir and the cypress together,
to adorn my sanctuary; and I will glorify the place for my feet. ...
1 Kings 5:10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar-trees and cypress-trees according to all his desire.

2 Chronicles 2:8 And send me cedar-trees, cypress-trees and sandal-wood from Lebanon, for, to my knowledge, your servants are expert wood-cutters in Lebanon; and my servants will be with yours.
*YL - This oil is extracted from the cypress tree, which has wood so durable that the cypress doors of Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica show no sign of decay even after 1,200 years. (Isaiah 44:14)

Gary Young on Cypress:

The oil of cypress originated from a tree so durable that the doors of St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome are made from it and show no signs of decay even after 1,200 years. The mighty cypress groves of Lebanon were described in the Apocryphal book of Ecclesiasticus as trees which “groweth up to the clouds.” Some Bible scholars believe that cypress may be the gopher wood used to build Noah’s ark. Cypress was historically used to support the circulatory system and is mentioned in Isaiah 44:14: “He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest.” Traditional texts refer to cypress as a decongestant for the veins and the lymphatic system, and as a support for the nervous system and pancreas. However, modern research has yet to verify these properties. Cypress may have also been used in ancient times for the treatment of pulmonary complaints, as well as other conditions, although these uses are not yet confirmed.

FRANKINCENSE & MYRRH

Picture
Matthew 2:11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with His mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Myrrh has a long history of use in skin care for its moisturizing properties to cleanse dry skin. It was highly regarded in biblical times and has an aroma that brings forth a deeper sense of spirituality.

*YL- One of the key ingredients in Moses’s holy anointing oil, myrrh was highly regarded by Biblical figures such as David and Solomon. (Proverbs 7:17)

From Experience

Myrrh is a thick oil that works best when blended or used with a carrier oil. The consistency of Myrrh is so thick and sticky, your bottle cap may get stuck and not be easily removed.

The third gift brought for the birth of Jesus was myrrh. The first use for myrrh in the Bible would suggest that its definitive Biblical use was to be used as a holy anointing oil. The main ingredient of the divinely-designed oil used to "anoint" high priests was myrrh, Prophets and kings were also included in this type of special ritualistic anointing. For example, Samuel anointed Saul and later David to be king over Israel (1 Samuel 10:1; 16:13; Psalm 89:20). God told Elijah: "Elisha...shalt thou anoint to be prophet" (1 Kings 19:16).

Gary Young On GALBANUM

Botanically known as Ferula gummosa, galbanum is mentioned in Exodus 30:34: “And the Lord said unto Moses, ‘Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense of each shall there be a like weight.’” Botanists have written that galbanum’s odor is strongly balsamic, pungent, and disagreeable when burned. There is an interesting suggestion in the Jewish Talmud as to why this powerful, less-than-fragrant resin was used in the holy incense: Every communal fast that does not include sinners of Israel is not a fast. This has been linked to the fact that incense included spices or perfumes with lovely fragrances, but was not complete without one spice: galbanum. With its earthy odor, galbanum is used for its cleansing and body-supporting properties. As we read the account of the anointing oil, we see that galbanum was included in the formula. This suggests that the compounding of these oils is what is really specific and where the strength really lies.
Picture
Perhaps one reason why ancient cultures esteemed galbanum may have been due to its ability to affect emotions, which is why some people today use this oil to help gather and concentrate their thoughts. This is one reason why galbanum is a primary oil in the formulation of the blend called Gathering™. It is powerful in its ability to elevate spiritual awareness and communication.

34 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Take fragrant spices—gum resin, onycha and galbanum—and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts,35 and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred. 36 Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. 37 Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the Lord.

- EXODUS 30:34-37

Popular Blends with GALBANUM

HYSSOP is a member of the Lamiaceae (mint) family, and looks fairly similar to lavender.

Picture
Used for almost a millennium for it's antiseptic properties as well as opening up the respiratory system.

HYSSOP in the Bible

There has been uncertainty the HYSSOP mentioned in the Bible is the same HYSSOP of today, but there is no uncertainty the H. officinalis has been used for almost a millennium.

PSALM 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

NUMBERS 19:6
The priest is to take some cedar wood, hyssop and scarlet wool and throw them onto the burning heifer.

EXODUS 12:22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.
                                                          THE DEATH OF JESUS

28
Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

- JOHN 19: 28-30

Myrtle (Myrtus communis)

Myrtle has an elevating aroma that is pleasing when diffused. It also has properties that can help beautify and enhance the appearance of healthy-looking skin when applied topically.

MYRTLE in the Bible
ZECHARIAH 1:8 I saw at night, and behold, a man was riding on a red horse, and he was standing among the myrtle trees which were in the ravine, with red, sorrel and white horses behind him.
ISAIAH 55:13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

*YL- Sukkot, commonly translated as Feast of Tabernacles, includes myrtle branches in its ceremony. (Nehemiah 8:15)

ONYCHA in the Bible

Picture
EXODUS 30:34 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight.

Onycha oil is an absolute, extracted from a tree resin by solvents, not by distillation. It is darkly colored and very thick. It will not usually pour through the small opening in the dropper cap of most essential oil bottles.
Dr. David Stewart, Ph. D.

Onycha is a Biblical oil mentioned in Exodus 30:34 as an ingredient in the Holy Incense to be diffused in temples of worship. Onycha oil (Styrax benzoin) is also a powerful antiseptic and facilitator of rapid healing. It goes by several common names including Friar's Balm and Javanese Frankincense. It is extracted from the resin of a tree that grows in the Far East, specifically in Indonesia.

For more than 200 years, hospitals have used an alcohol solution of this oil as their primary antiseptic. Dissolved in ethyl alcohol, it is called Benzoin or Tincture of Benzoin. It is the smell of this tincture that used to give hospitals their peculiar "hospital smell."

Onycha was an ingredient in the “pure and holy” perfume or incense the Lord commanded Moses to make. (Exodus 30:34)

*YL- Onycha was an ingredient in the “pure and holy” perfume or incense the Lord commanded Moses to make. (Exodus 30:34)

Rose of Sharon

Song of Solomon I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.

NOTE: Rose of Sharon is NOT a rose as we regard on Valentine's Day. Rose of Sharon is known as "Rock Rose" with less flower and less thorny with more gum in the plant. Ancient shepherds noted the gum of the rose would become entangled with the goat and sheep's wool, so they would rub this gum in their wounds and noted it would sooth and heal them.

Cistus is believed to be the biblical rose of Sharon, and its honey-like fragrance is soothing and uplifting.
Cistus, also known as Rock rose, is a resinous and extremely fragrant bush that grows in the wild throughout the Mediterranean region. The essential oil of cistus offers a beautiful, sweet, honey-like, herbaceous aroma to perfume and aromatherapy blends.
**Studied for its effects on the regeneration of cells.

***YL-
This rock rose has a sweet, honey-like scent and may be the flower referred to as the Rose of Sharon.

SPIKENARD in the Bible

JOHN 12:3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Picture

How expensive was the spikenard Mary used to anoint Jesus' feet? One denarius was the wage for one day's labor, so if Judas' estimate of the value of Mary's spikenard is correct, "three hundred denarii" (John 12:5) would have been someone's annual salary, equivalent to several tens of thousands of dollars today.
